Cora: Miss you loads. XOXO

Cora: Rethinking everything. Ready to chat again, no pressure. Can you swing by the apartment after work?

Cora: Hey, Kenna? :(

A small smile sneaks onto my face, the first in a while. Cora's my ride-or-die. Her message's like a glint of light in my pitch-black tunnel of slow progress.

Outside, it's warm, so I skip the bus and stroll from the bar to the subway. I pause, looking up into the dark sky. Stars don't show up in New York, thanks to the city lights being crazy bright. Still, I send a quiet wish to the sky, seeking some guidance.

I don't get far with my thoughts before a black car with tinted windows stops next to me, and the passenger window slides down.

"Miss Hall," an unfamiliar voice beckons, but I press on, my heels clicking faster against the pavement. The voice insists, "Miss Hall!" It strikes me then that he's calling me by a name from my past. Panic rises, my heart racing from trepidation, not delight.

I push forward, yet he's persistent, drawing closer with every step.

"Miss Hall, Mr. Cooper sent me for you." Colin's name stops me dead in my tracks. Hesitantly, I turn to face the stranger. He offers a calming smile, noting my apprehension. "I promise, I'm harmless. Mr. Cooper just thought you shouldn't be alone tonight. I'm his chauffeur."

Skeptical, I study him, feeling the weight of my past name heavy on my chest. Yet, something about his demeanor convinces me to take a chance. Sliding into the back seat, I'm caught off guard when I find Colin, his familiar eyes meeting mine.

"I couldn't bear the thought of you escaping me again," he whispers, reaching out and intertwining our fingers. His touch, tender yet firm, sends shivers up my spine. I'm rendered speechless, caught between the past and the present, my heart thudding loudly against my ribcage.

"And you should read fewer newspapers," he comments with a more lucid look, a stark contrast to the intoxicated man I'd seen earlier.

The city's buzz outside the window contrasts sharply with our poignant silence. As the car moves through the neon-lit streets, our shared memories and unsaid words hang heavily between us.

Colin's hotel looms adjacent to Central Park, its facade blending seamlessly with the surrounding structures. We go down into an underground parking, the entrance to which I hardly recognize amidst the cityscape.

Emerging from the car, Colin's hand finds mine, a gesture that feels both comforting and intimate. We make our way to the elevator. Gratefully, he respects my silence, not probing for answers. In the elevator, he taps a unique card against a discreet reader I hadn't noticed, hinting at the exclusivity of his accommodations.

"We're going straight to my suite." The elevator doors seal us in, and as we go up, a tight knot forms in my stomach. The display ticks off the floors rapidly, stopping finally at the 50th. The gulp in my throat is almost audible as the doors part and we step out into the corridor.
